Arctic Sea improves real-time food transportation monitoring to reduce waste

DataloggerENTo reduce food wastage, Basque Company ARCTIC SEA has designed Coollogger, a reuseable device (datalogger) for tracking perishable products during logistics and providing real-time data about parameters like temperature, humidity, knocks and product geolocation.

The technology has been developed in the framework of the Coollogger Reuse project, for which ARCTIC SEA received a grant of almost 90,000 euros from the 2020 call for “Aid for the realization of ecodesign projects, demonstration in circular economy and eco-innovation” from Ihobe, the Publicly-Owned Environmental Management Company of the Basque Government with financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Most of the devices currently used in international food transport to monitor perishable product conservation are designed for single use. They are extremely simple devices, cannot supply real-time information and measure very few parameters. They are really only used when the goods reach their destination to check whether conditions during transport were optimal, which does not protect the food from being damaged in adverse conditions.

To resolve this problem, Basque Company ARCTIC SEA has started marketing devices (dataloggers) which both reduce electronic waste and incorporate more technology in the device. From now on, the CLCircular project will be making use of these new capacities, having incorporated features for tracking parameter in real time through the logistics chain: temperature, humidity, knocks, door opening and geolocalisation. This means that the instant any of these parameters deviate from the optimal range, the logistics company can take action and remedy the situation, protecting the load from spoilage.

The project is designed based on circular economy criteria which prioritises reuse and servitization, so that user companies can reduce their environmental impact and economic costs at a stroke, improving operational sustainability and competitiveness.

ARCTIC SEA is already developing a more sophisticated version of the device, including the possibility of managing goods traceability using Blockchain technology, Big Data and business intelligence, as well as measuring emissions.
