“RECYCLING IS UP TO US”

The Basque Government’s Ministry of the Environment, Territorial Planning and Housing, in conjunction with the provincial councils, around thirty municipalities of the Basque Country, Ecoembes and Ecovidrio, launched the “RECYCLING IS UP TO US” (RECICLAR ES LO NUESTRO) environmental awareness campaign in 2017.

The campaign started out as a pilot scheme in five municipalities of the Basque Country in 2017. In 2018, with the involvement of the Provincial Councils, it became the first joint campaign of these characteristics driven by Basque institutions, with the support of the two main waste managers: Ecovidrio, in the glass packaging fraction, and Ecoembes, which treats metal, carton, plastic and cardboard packaging.

The large “Recycling is Up to Us” travelling marquee has been set up all over the Basque Campaign The marquee has exhibition, play and outdoor activity areas, where the emphasis is always on participation and interaction to reach the citizens with a dual purpose: how to recycle more, by responding to their excuses for not recycling, and how to recycle better, by explaining which type of waste has to be put in each container.

Furthermore, guided visits for schools have also been arranged beforehand. The visits are designed for students in the last years of primary school and in secondary school, last around an hour and are conducted in Basque.
