The Basque Country tops the national ranking for EU Ecolabel accommodation

Etiqueta Ecológica Europea_ENThere are 35 EU Ecolabel certified accommodation options in the Basque Country, representing 69% of all 51 eco-friendly hotels and campsites nationwide to have been awarded this environmental certification. This is proof the Basque Country's commitment to offering sustainable accommodation to visitors. Of the 35 hotels and campsites, eleven are in Araba, 15 in Bizkaia and nine in Gipuzkoa. Only Austria (39), Italy (55) and France (182) are ahead of the Basque Country in this ranking.

The EU Ecolabel is the official European Commission label for environmental excellence. It is a truthful, rigorous, voluntary system that promotes products and services with a lower environmental impact that contribute to effective use of resources and a high level of environmental protection. The EU Ecolabel logo makes these products and services easy to identify.

As well as minimising and controlling their consumption, these accommodations have efficient heating and lighting equipment and water-saving devices. They promote sustainable means of transport and offer guests local and organic products.

The Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government, through the Vice-Ministry for Environmental Sustainability, is responsible for determining whether the accommodation complies with a series of strict environmental criteria.

The requirements include having a documented environmental management and control system containing records and measurements that improve environmental performance; compliance with environmental and sector and labour laws and regulations; compliance with 22 mandatory standards established in different areas (general management, energy, water, waste and sewage, as well as other criteria such as sustainable transport). These businesses must also achieve a minimum score on a battery of optional criteria, which vary depending on the services offered by the accommodation.

The accommodation must also inform guests about these commitments and invite and encourage them to behave in ways that contribute to better environmental protection.
