ASTEKLIMA 2022 involves Basque citizens in the challenge posed by the energy and climate transition with more than 200 activities
The commitment to climate action by 58 city councils, a community of municipalities and three governing bodies - in addition to three associations and five private sector entities - has made it possible to organise more than 200 activities that have focused on the action of municipalities and citizens to mobilise and put the challenge of climate change and energy transition on the public agenda, all with one premise: Every action, no matter how small, counts.
The wide range of activities on offer include workshops, talks, tours, interpretative excursions and games, which will allow Basque citizens to learn about the challenges posed by climate change and understand the importance of acting locally to tackle current and future challenges.
Among other activities, the agenda of the third Euskadi Climate and Energy Week includes a presentation on local climate eco-innovation projects, such as the Natur Eskola in Oñati (Gipuzkoa), which was completely refurbished by implementing various bio-construction and nature-based solutions, workshops on climate change, on reusing, renovating, recycling, robotics, natural cosmetics, composting, etc., and citizen volunteering initiatives to raise awareness of climate change, such as cleaning the seabed, plantations or collecting rubbish, excursions and tours to learn about and understand our environment, and cultural events, such as theatre, concerts, storytelling and murals.
With the start of the Euskadi Climate and Energy Week, Ihobe also launched the KLIMAMETRAJE youth short film competition on climate change, with the dual aim of sharing the views of Basque youth regarding the effects of climate change on the Basque Country, and mobilising Basque citizens.
Prizes include electric bicycles and eco-based rural breaks. The registration period is now open and will run until November 18, coinciding with the end of the COP27-Climate Summit, which this year will be held in Egypt.
The launch of this competition for young people is part of the EUs European Year of Youth 2022, which aims to put the spotlight on the role of young people in building a greener, more inclusive and digital future for Europe.

Another of the highlights of this edition of ASTEKLIMA was the Instruments for driving climate action on natural heritage conference, which was held on September 30 at the Europa Conference & Exhibition Centre in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where Ihobe presented a new collection of tools (methodologies, analysis tools, calculation tools and case studies) that make it possible to promote climate action on natural heritage.
The instruments presented are pioneering: there are no similar tools in Spain and very few in the rest of Europe. Their aim is to simplify the process of diagnosing the effects of climate change on the Basque Country's natural heritage. It should be possible to transfer the diagnostic methodologies to other autonomous communities, regions or territories.
So far, the collection is made up of 10 complementary tools, including two tools for providing an overall diagnosis, two tools for creating knowledge for action, and two tools for action that fill a knowledge gap in the technical field and respond to a demand from the agents in charge of managing natural heritage.

KLIMAMETRAJE, a youth short film competition on climate change

The videos submitted to the competition must be between 30 and 90 seconds long and can be submitted in two categories: the first category is for videos that show the impacts of climate change on the Basque Country and the second category is for videos that propose solutions, initiatives or tools to promote climate action.Prizes include electric bicycles and eco-based rural breaks.
