Biolan develops ecobiosensors to keep its materials in the circular economy
BIOLAN is developing next generation, more sustainable ecobiosensors through miniaturization and reducing the number of electronic components in its measuring equipment. BIOLAN has received support from publicly-owned company Ihobe in the framework as part of the “Support for ecodesign and circular economy and eco-design projects” financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to design and launch this new product line.

It has designed the new products as part of the ECOBIOSENSOR project, whose mission is to create a new generation of more sustainable biosensors to contribute to dematerialization and add to product recycling possibilities. At the same time, BIOLAN has analysed the environmental impact of test strips using different substrate materials and conductive inks. The environmental performance of these new products has been measured from a lifecycle standpoint.

The use of simple, cost-efficient and portable diagnostic devices based on single-use or disposable systems is a growing trend, both in the food industry and in the clinical and veterinary industries. These devices are replacing traditional, more time-consuming and costly methods. “Application of materials with a lower environmental footprint and miniaturization of analytical devices are promising strategies to reduce the environmental impact of the massive use of these devices,” says the company.

About BIOLAN

BIOLAN Microbiosensors develops, manufactures and markets measurement devices for monitoring parameters related to food quality and safety, as well as health diagnostics. These analytical devises are based on either electrochemical enzyme biosensors or lateral flow immunoassays, allowing accurate, simple and rapid tests to be performed of a wide variety of samples.
Continuous innovation is intrinsic to BIOLAN's strategy, and sustainability and reducing its environmental impact are among its current objectives.
